The antenna attaches directly to the hard drive red markers , therefore attaching the antenna can move the hard drive around and loosen the connection of the hard drive cable to the logic board. Do not remove the antenna plate yet. Use the flat end of a spudger to pry the hard drive connector up from its socket on the logic board. Use the tip of a spudger to lift the IR sensor connector up and out of its socket on the logic board.
To remove the logic board, the two cylindrical rods of the Mac mini Logic Board Removal Tool must be inserted into the holes highlighted in red. Inserting instruments into any logic board holes other than the ones highlighted in red may destroy the logic board. Be sure it makes contact with the top side of outer case below the logic board before proceeding. Pull the hard drive away from the front edge of the mini and remove it from the outer case.
Remove the hard drive cable by pulling its connector straight away from the hard drive. If you are installing a new hard drive, we have an OS X install guide to get you up and running. Cancel: I did not complete this guide.

Badges: Very helpful guide, thanks! As many have said before, I would not detach the fan or antenna, just move it out of the way. One very trivial tip: slide a piece of paper over the logic board as soon as you've removed the fan, as a protection against accidentally touching the components with your fingers or tools. I did not reinstall the plastic cover on the HDD.
Dismantling the Mini was simple, but the two hardest steps when installing a new hard drive were sliding the drive back in aligned correctly, and replacing the antenna grill.
Even with the logic board pushed out, I found it difficult to line up the screws on the hard drive and get it seated properly. As for the grill, it would not line up with the screw holes.
I had to use the Mac Mini tool hooked into a hole in the grill as a lever to lift it up and in towards the lip of the rim it was sitting on. There was an audible snap as it settled into place.
I've done about a dozen mac mini to SSD upgrades over the past few years but I've only owned a logic board removal tool for my latest upgrade. I was struggling to get the drive pegs into the grommet, and the usual 'turn it upside down and giggle it around' trick just wasn't working for me. I tried getting a spudger underneath the drive to lift it up into the grommet holes but there wasn't enough clearance to get any leverage.
I used the mini opening tool with one end underneath the drive, and the center portion sticking out perpendicular to the motherboard I'll add a picture to lift the drive up and into place. The Mac Mini Late retains the model number identifier of A, but. Gone are the handy thumb indents and indicators. This is the smallest Torx Security screw we've ever seen -- our kits go down to T7 Se. Improvisation complete! Advanced Hydraulic Bearing Hmm. AHB is best for fans that operate at a lower speed. Using our handy hand-powered Mac Mini logic board removal tool, we handily remove our Mac Mini's handsome logic board.

While past Mac Minis have featured two SATA ports, allowing users to upgrade their base model with an extra hard drive, this year we only get one. However, this empty socket over here orange may well be a spot for a PCIe cable, enabling the installation of a blade SSD. This means that if you want to upgrade the RAM, you can only. We've got the power supply at the tips of our fingers. It's an easy extraction, even if it took awhile to get here. We get a slight rush before we realize it is the same as the model Before we go, let's pull out the hard drive tray and take a look at the platter drive our Mini came loaded with.

New Mac mini restricts RAM and storage upgrades, but hints at PCIe SSD possibilities

Desktop sales were thousand, down Low desktop sales can be attributed to no updates to the Mac mini since July , the iMac since May , and the Mac Pro since July unless you count faster CPUs in Mid , but that was the only change to this increasingly outdated model. Although Macs are a less substantial part of Apple's corporate picture, Apple continues to grow the Mac platform.
AppleInsider's Mikey Campbell notes that in a post to Tumblr, developer Patrick Stein has unofficially confirmed that Mountain Lion provides Fusion Drive support for current Macs, and was able to "build" a hybrid drive compatible with Apple's new storage technology.

It remains to be seen if Apple will offer Mac owners an easy way to configure their own components without having to run Terminal and command line code. And Time Machine as backup has failed me as well in the past. Harris says he was initially bullish on the Fusion Drive, largely because it is the first hybrid drive with enough flash capacity to give users a truly SSD experience - while offering capacity at a much lower cost per GB than you get with pure SSD media. However, he says that as more details emerged, he's changed his opinion of Fusion, now deeming it okay for casual users whose work doesn't involve processing dozens of GBs of data regularly, but recommending professionals who use large data apps where availability is critical avoid the Fusion Drive because of the way it manages data, and citing Seagate's Momentus XT hybrid drive algorithms as data management done right.
